Shannon Bouton

Shannon leads McKinsey.org’s Sustainable Communities program, working with city governments, social enterprises, and companies to develop initiatives that will make cities more environmentally sustainable and livable, starting with recycling.

Prior to joining McKinsey.org, Shannon worked for 12 years at McKinsey & Company, most recently as the Chief Operating Officer of the McKinsey Center for Business and Environment.

She helped to found McKinsey’s Sustainability practice. In her work with the Cities Special Initiative, she helped develop tools to enable cities to improve economic development, climate action planning, service delivery, transportation, and organizational performance. Shannon also served a range of public- and private-sector clients on buildings energy efficiency strategies, transportation strategy, and greenhouse gas emissions reduction.

Prior to joining McKinsey, Shannon was a field biologist. She has served as an environmental consultant to grass roots non-profits in the Brazilian Pantanal, and to the Florida Army Corp of Engineers. A citizen of both the United States and Brazil, she holds a PhD in natural resources and the environment from the University of Michigan.
