As Assistant Vice Chancellor for Sustainability, Phil collaborates with senior administrators, faculty, and staff to incorporate and implement sustainable practices into Washington University’s strategic planning, operations, and resource management. Our work spans carbon reduction, renewable energy, green building, alternative transportation, circularity + waste minimization/diversion, and more. A key component of our work is to interweave campus operations with research to create a living laboratory and with teaching to foster the next wave of sustainability/climate leaders. Phil also teaches an interdisciplinary capstone course on renewable energy, de-carbonization, and the electric grid that covers the technical, policy, and financial factors shaping energy. In addition, Phil leads and participates in a number of national and regional partnerships to accelerate climate action and sustainable practice, including co-founding the Midwest Climate Collaborative, serving on the University Climate Change Coalition Steering Committee, and co-chairing a St. Louis regional energy & emissions working group.
